Recently, I had a conversation with a fellow classmate about the perks of being a child of the 80's. Not that really honestly remember much about the 80's, but together, my friend and I came up with a list of what makes being a child of the 80's so rad. For all of my readers who are also, like me, fortunate enough to have been born in the 80's, and even for those who were not, here's a list which I believe highlights the best of what I remember about the 80's and on into the 90's:
1. Cabbage Patch dolls--I loved the signature on the butt! Even though, I hear, it prompted many 80's babies tattoo their rear-ends with "Xavier Roberts," it was the coolest doll just for that reason! Ironically, the plush yarn-hair dolls are coming back onto the scene, but oddly they look a little less than what I remember them being.
2. "Roseanne," "The Cosby Show," ""Mr. Belvedere," "The Smurfs," "Silver Spoons," and all those great shows of the time period--I love watching these reruns on Nick @ Nite, mostly for the memories I have of watching them as a kid with my dad and brothers, but also because I sure wish those clothes would come back in fashion! I mean, honestly, those parachute pants that Theo wore, or the suit coat, tie and slacks that Mr. B cleaned the house in... That's what I call fashion, people. Roseanne especially leaves a smile on my face because I remember watching that with my dad and listening to him laugh his rear off at jokes that, at the time, I didn't understand. But now, I could watch all Roseanne all the time!
3. Poofy Hair-bows--I love my mom dearly, but looking back at pictures from elementary school and the things she put in my hair really makes me wonder if she had some sort of joy of making me look like a buffoon! Not only was the fabric usually atrocious (see-through, chiffon, shiny, what have you), but they usually took up more space on my head than my hair did! You know it's a bad sign when the bow is bigger than your 80's claw bangs. Oh, and especially those odd bows made of shoelaces...Those always confused me a bit.
4. Cool prizes in Cracker Jacks-- It's an unfortunate event these days to open a box of Cracker Jacks only to find that the prize consists of a small square of paper that has some silly riddle or cartoon on it. I remember, way back when, opening Cracker Jacks and actually having a prize; a kazoo, a piece of Bazooka gum, fake tattoos, and maybe even a real Cracker Jack ring!! I ask you this, what has the world come to?
5. Stretch/stirrup pants, boxer-shorts with tights, and Units belts--If you were a girl of the 80's/90's, you no doubt recognize these fashion hits. Stretch and stirrup pants were, for small skinny girls at school, the item to have in any color. You couldn't go wrong wearing a pair of black stretch pants with a stirrup with a huge sweater any day of the week. Also, I was a humoungous fan of wearing plaid boxer shorts (not real boxer shorts, but some fancier ones my mom bought me) with thick old tights. This was the look of fall; not sure if you really want to wear pants or shorts? Wear tights with shorts!! Units belts were a hideous tradition that made any body type look quite frumpy and bulgy in the middle. It was like an oversized wrist band, except for your waist.
That will be all for now. If you have any other favorites of the 80's/90's drop a comment and I'll continue to come up with a list.
It's hump day...YAY!!!...so everyone start making weekend plans. Love you all.
