Music Picks

Slammin' Saturday to you.

I've been honestly meaning to post the last two days, but my weariness got the better of me. Last night, the one night of the week that I can stay up LATE, I fell asleep soundly on Ben's shoulder at 9 P.M. Somewhere between 9 and 10, I got up and got in bed and slept peacefully through the night until 10 A.M. It felt wonderful.

When I'm not playing student teacher or wife, I like to consider myself a connoisseur of music. Thanks to my dad, I'm a fan of a wide range of music; everything from the Divine Miss M (Bette Midler) to the wacky antics of BNL (Barnaked Ladies). Much to his demise, however, I also enjoy some pop artists such as older sis Simpson (Jessica), and an occasional dose of Mrs. Federline (Brittany Spears). (Like I said, and OCCASIONAL dose).

I was excited, then, when I opened a couple of gift cardsto local music stores for Christmas. I had recently seen the wonderful production of Andrew Loyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera and was looking forward to purchasing the CD for my own enjoyment. When I went to the store to get the album, they were sold out so I chose two other CD's that had been on my Wish List for a time: Los Lonely Boys and John Mayer-Heavier Things. I've only had chance to listen to each CD a few times, but I like what I hear.

For my readers, I present to you my review of some of my favorite songs on these albums as well as a few of my other favorite songs of the moment. I hope my dad will approve. hehehe :) I call it Lauren's Music Picks for the Week:

From Los Lonely Boys-- Senorita, a jumpy and peppy tune found at the beginning of the cd. It kind of reminds me of being in Mexico on our honeymoon and driving through the run-down city of Ensenada.
Heaven, the song most of you would be familiar with, is one that I forever will have in my head as I write information on the white boards at school and work on lesson plans. If you listen to the words, you might think I despise those activities but on the contrary...To me, after years of being school, HEAVEN will be when I finally have my own classroom and an education degree with my name on it.
More Than Love reminds me of a highschool dance when you're really super nervous to be dancing with your crush. One wrong move and they may leave you standing alone in the corner next to the refreshment stand. Everything is so serious that you are certain you're in love, but really, it's just nerves. AHHH, the good ol' days of sweaty palms, sweaty underarms, and flat hair.

From Heavier Things: Clarity is just a fun song to sing to because of the "ah-oo, ah-oo" part. I sing this song when I'm in the shower nearly burning the top layer of flesh off with the heat of the water. Also, you can't help but LOVE Mr. Mayer's smooth-as-honey voice.
Bigger Than My Body, also another fun one to sing when trying to relax. It makes me feel like I can do dang near anything with his encouragement of "Someday I'll fly, someday I'll soar..." What a nice guy, singing for you with his hot voice and giving you a boost of confidence all at the same time.
Daughters, a song you might be hearing much of on the radio these days, makes me cry. Perhaps I don't quite understand what Johnny is saying here, but it seems like its a plea for everyone to be lucky enough to have a daddy. "Fathers, be good to your daughters, Daughters will love like you do, Girls become lovers who turn into mothers, So mothers, be good to your daughters too." Brilliant. Pure sweetness in those lyrics. I can't help but think of my daddy-o and moma when I listen to this song.

Random Choice of the week: Nelly and Tim McGraw's strange collaboration but wonderful song, Over and Over Again. Hate me if I'm wrong, but I love this song because it's just so cool. Also, it's been in my head all freaking day so I had no choice but to include it. Listen to it. You'll love it just as much as I do.

Happy Listening.
