Much of the media coverage this week has been on the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina. The havoc the storm caused is truely unreal.
In the pre-event of the hurricane, I was amazed at the idiotic display of sheer dumbness of the news reporters. One report I saw showed a reporter donning rain gear (which was drenched) standing in the middle of a road, random debris flying left and right, up and down. The wind was, of course, blowing, enough so that his windbreaker wasn't doing any breaking. He was commentating about a nearby Chili's sign that was ready to come crashing down.
"Don't worry," he said breathlessly, as he cranked his neck nervously to the sign, "We're far enough away that it shouldn't hit us." Duh! In 180mph winds, you don't know if it will or will not hit you.
When the media urges its veiwers to "abandon ship" so to speak, and to "get the heck out of dodge," shouldn't they heed their own advice?
My prayers are with those devastated by this storm.
