"Next to acquiring good friends, the best acquisition is that of a good book."

"Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested." --Francis Bacon

I love this quote. So true, so powerful. Much of what people read these days are tasted-newspaper and magazine articles, billboards. Some few, as the quote suggests, should be "chewed and digested."

I've recently read a few of those books. Here's my opinion and recommendation on a few good books:

A Million Little Pieces, James Frey: An Oprah Bookclub book. It's a wonderful account of one man's real-life journey of addiction, recovery, and keeping promises. I liked it because it was real, harsh, and provoking. Though I've never had an addiction to anything (besides chocolate) this serious, I related to James' struggles and enlightened moments. It is a long read, but Frey literally sucks you in so you can't put it down. Using a unique writing style, James Frey compels the reader to continue reading the gripping tale.

The Sad Truth about Happiness, Anne Giradine : My darling grandma suggested this book to me! It's a must read! A simply fascinating tale of Maggie, whose roommate creates the silly quizzes in magazines (such as, Is he Really Into You?). After taking a quiz predicting someone's death, Maggie finds out she has just months to live. She learns quickly to reevaluate life, but ends up making a stupid mistake that involves family troubles. Eventually, I think, she learns the truth about happiness in a somewhat sad way. I enjoyed this book most for the characters, the dynamics, and bits of truth I found for my own life.

Hope these two books may be on your nightstand in the near future. Of course, I have lots of other recommendations, mostly stemming from Young Adult literature genre.

Happy Reading!!
