So I went to the dentist today. I haven't been since the week before I got married, 3 1/2 years ago. I was in tears last night because of nerves. I made Ben go with me....for support....but regretted when we got there and he was making drill noises and going into detail on how painful it would be.
I sat in the chair, stiff as a board, as the hygienist started the cleaning. I made sure to tell her I was a nervous wreck, asked her to be gentle to my sensitive teeth, and tried my best to relax while listening the Les Mis on my iPod. She was great. After the cleaning she gave me some suggestions on how to help the sensitivity...I have receding gum line on my top back teeth (from braces), which causes the sensitivity to cold, air, and sweets.
When they did the x-rays, I was just waiting to hear something like, "Well, we'll need to see you back sometime soon so we can fill 5 cavities." I was all prepared with my, "Oh, I'll do SO much better with my teeth, I won't eat ANY more cinnamon gummy bears..." speech. Finally, the dentist walked in. He put on his gloves (I hate the smell of those things), sat down and looked at the x-rays. Then, without word, he looked in my mouth for about 2.5 seconds, stood up and took off the little bib thing they put on you to guard your clothes from the water junk. And do you want to know what he said to me, as he put his glove-covered (and I suppose saliva covered) hand on my shoulder?
"You have really great teeth. Just keep flossing, use the sensitivity toothpaste, come back in 6 months and we'll see how we're doing."
Yeah, that's it. No, "I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you have 5 cavities." No, "We'll need to see you in a week for a double root canal."
I have good teeth AND no cavities!!!
For someone who always uses the, "I'd rather go see the dentist" line when comparing two options (usually negative), I suppose I'll need to find another line now because as of today, I love the dentist.
(I'm just on my way to the airport to see Oma and Opa Hubert home from their mission to Germany. The WHOLE Hubert family will be there--the airport won't know what hit them after tonight's visit!)
